Each student is encouraged to commit to at
least two extramural activities per year. Experience has shown that students who
become fully involved in the corporate life of the school are not only the
happiest, but ultimately the most successful.
Students compete on an individual basis in local competitions in the first term. They have the opportunity to move on to PADSSA, KZN and USSASA trials at provincial and national level, depending on their ability.
This is played in the school hall by boys and girls at junior and senior level. The teams play both friendly games and compete at inter-school level, and have produced some of the best players in the country.
Touch rugby is played in the third term and is a sport primary for girls. Whilst not physically dangerous, it nevertheless requires a quick mind and a certain fitness level to participate. This is becoming an increasingly popular sport for girls at our school.
Hillcrest fields U14, U15 and the open teams every weekend. Our teams have excellent facilities with the school boasting three turf pitches and five practice nets. All teams have a coach assigned to them and receive excellent coaching throughout Terms One and Four.
Hillcrest High School has made a name for itself in this sport, producing a number of provincial and national riders. The school participates in an annual inter-schools equestrian competition. Our students also participate in the SANESA events throughout the year.
Outdoor hockey is a second term activity for boys and girls. Matches are played against local schools on a weekly basis, as well as against schools from Johannesburg during our annual Easter Festival. Our four grass hockey fields cater for players from the U14, U16 and Open age groups.
This sport is offered to the girls in the first term. We field U14, U16 and Open teams in the inter-schools league.
The school offers a range of non-traditional team and individual sporting activities, including multisport, trail running, duathlon, triathlon, climbing, hiking and mountain biking. These are overseen by the Adventure Sports Club.
Netball fixtures are played midweek and on Saturdays in the second term. We have three grass and four all-weather courts. Girls play in U14, U15, U16 and Open age groups. Our First Team also participates in the annual Easter Festival against various Johannesburg schools.
Rugby is a major sport for boys at Hillcrest High School with experienced coaches offering specialised coaching. We field teams in the U14, U15 and Open age groups. In 2010 our school was one of nine schools to be accredited as a Discovery Sharksmart School of Excellence and we have consistently maintained
the criteria expected of us
This sport is offered to boys and girls. The school has both senior and junior soccer teams that enjoy regular fixtures with Durban and Pietermartizburg schools in the third term. This year our Girls' First Team achieved great success at home and at the SA Sports Tours Schools' Soccer Tournament in East London where they were placed top of their group.
Matches are played in the third term, either at Queensmead (boys) or at Ashley Sports Club (girls) at junior and senior level.
Swimming at Hillcrest High is very strong. The school has a heated pool and enjoys the coaching services of Melissa Martinson (formerly Corfe), an Olympic, All African and Commonwealth swimmer. The swimming programme supports both the competitive and the social swimmer.
This sport is offered to boys and girls. Matches are played regularly and practice takes place at the Hillcrest Sports Club. Social tennis is encouraged amongst students.
We play regular inter-school matches in the fourth term.
